Launched in the summer of 2020, Valorant took the FPS genre by storm. Its unique twist of able characters transformed the 5v5 format purely based on aim. Through abilities, vibrant characters, and incredible maps, Riot spiced up the FPS genre. However, while the game goes beyond satisfying the needs of modern gamers, it's still struggling to nail the basics.

Crucial features Valorant is still missing in 2023

In 2023, players have plenty of complaints from Riot, some of which are too reasonable to go unnoticed. So here are the top five features that should have been part of Valorant since the beginning.

During Valorant's first year of release, Riot revealed an in-game replay system on the cards. Fast forward two years, and players are still bugging the developer for a much-needed feature. Valorant's esports scene is no longer nascent. Instead, it's a full-fledged behemoth that calls for replay.

“Yes! [Replay] is something that we're interested in exploring soon. Whether it's to study previous matches for tactical advantages or to create spicy memes, we know that players will find a wide range of interesting uses for a system like this,” 

It's general practice in FPS esports for players to watch their scrims to understand the enemy's gameplay and clean up their own strategy. But, currently, there's no way to download gameplay in Valorant to watch later, which is stressful for aspiring pros. It's also an issue at the production level at small-scale esports events. So, if you don't have another way to save replay in Valorant, your spicy gameplay is gone forever.

Once you have committed to Valorant ranked, you're entirely in. There's no way to back out. You can't leave your desk to take the door, get a sip of water, or even fix FPS or ping issues. The ranked mode of Valorant currently doesn't have a tactical timeout feature, likely due to an extended buy period which is considered enough time to devise a sound plan for the next round. But it's still a problem.

Timeouts aren't always used for tactical reasons. Sudden ping issues are expected in multiplayer games, and due to the lack of a two-time, players often have to deal with AKF penalties. Not just that, it also heavily impacts the overall team performance.

In 2023, Valorant has a total of nine maps, but seven of them are active in the pool. Despite such a large map pool, Valorant players still don't have control over their map picks. So whatever the RNG picks, they must play. Consequently, players often dodge the maps they don't wish to play, again leading to bans and penalties. A map pick and ban system would allow players to lock horns on the location they like through fair means.

Valorant's skin market is outdated. According to the 

, they sometimes have to wait for months to get the desired skin in their rotation. So Riot devised a four-slot store in Project: A when Valorant had less than a dozen bundles. In 2023, Valorant inventory is flush with over 60 skin lines, cramming in the four slots.

This is highly frustrating to skin collectors who wait months for their favorite skins only to buy something else due to artificial scarcity. In 2023, Valorant should have at least six slots to accommodate the bundles and increase the odds of Premium skins appearing in the daily store.

While the four-slot model sure makes Riot's skin business more lucrative, players aren't happy with the approach. The increased wait time has become more frustrating as Riot rolls out new bundles. The community is now requesting more slots and a consumer-friendly market.

Once you buy a Valorant skin, it's yours forever. Now, how many Vandal skins can you possibly buy? After all, you only juggle between a few. Players often sell their ranked accounts to make up for their money and stacked skins, leading to an MMR disbalance and smurfs in Valorant. All because Valorant players want a bang for the buck.

Allowing players to gift used items or trade them will kill the account trading culture from the root. Not just that, players will also benefit from their purchase in the long term. However, a system like this will make Riot's daily rotational store redundant. But it's still an attractive feature.

Riot is firing on all cylinders to make Valorant the go-to FPS game. Fortunately, the game developer actively listens to the community, so players should keep their fingers crossed and hope that one of the features mentioned above makes the cut in 2023.

Top 5 features that Valorant desperately needs in 2023

If you're new to Valorant, you're probably overwhelmed by the long list of agents with ability names straight out of an action-super hero movie. The power-packed protocol of 20+ agents offers a toolkit that suits various different playstyles. Thankfully, all of them are divided into four categories, so you can at least cut down your potential picks to a single figure.

There are four character classes in Valorant: Controllers, Duelists, Initiators, and Sentinels. Each class has unique abilities that cater to a specific playstyle. Within each category, there are many agents, and you must pick your main wisely –If you want to climb the cut-throat ladder that is!

What's the best Valorant agent class for your playstyle?

The first step towards finding your perfect agent is determining which class your playstyle aligns with. If you have played other FPS games, it should be easier to find the ideal type, but just knowing how you tackle an enemy in a game is also enough information to deduce the category.

: Are you an aggressive player who likes to push forward and take risks? Then a Duelist might be the right class for you. But, if you are more of a strategic player who likes to control the battlefield, then a Controller or Sentinel might be a better fit.

: Do you have good aim and reaction times? Then you should choose a Duelist that can take advantage of your quick reflexes. Are you good at reading the game and making strategic decisions? Then, choose an Initiator that can help your team gather information.

When playing in a team, it's essential to consider the overall team composition and choose a character class that complements your teammates' playstyles. For example, if your team already has several Duelists, you might want to select a Sentinel or Controller to balance out the team. Typically, it’s best to not have more than one duelist, but we won’t judge if your team picks three. More than that almost always translates to disaster.

If you're completely new to FPS, it's best to experiment with different classes and see which suits you best. Take advantage of the free rotation and play different characters to get a feel for their abilities and playstyles. Playing a few games should help you observe your own playstyle and decide on a character class.

If you have decided on the character class, you're ready to pick the perfect agent. Each category has many options, but not all of them are viable. Here are the best agents in each class for your playstyle:

If you picked Duelist as your category, it means you like to push in first and create space for your team. Raze is currently the best agent to do the job, at least for a beginner. Her Boombot helps clear close choke points and find the best spot to break into the site.

Pick Reyna or Jett if you're confident in your skills and have some experience in FPS. Both agents are top duelists, but green players may disappoint their teammates on these two. So only pick them if you're playing high risk for high reward.

Sentinels are the perfect category for a beginner just testing the waters. It's laid back and involves less action. Pick Sage if you're completely new to FPS, as her toolkit doesn't require a lot of learning or technique. Just hand out heals and block sites, and you're good.

Killjoy is an excellent pick for players who want a little bit of drama but from safety. Her Turret and Nanoswarms can help tenderize enemies so you can finish them off. Cypher could also be a great option, but his learning curve is a bit steep.

So you want to play aggressively but just aren't ready or sure. Pick an initiator and become your duelists' side-kick, except you'd have a tremendous overall impact. Maybe even more than the Duelist.

The initiator category is flush with excellent options, but Breach is perfect for newbies. His flashes and stuns are the confident boosters, creating opportunities for easy kills. You may also opt for Kay/O if you're new to Valorant. His toolkit is simple, designed to make the game simpler for ace-aimers.

The best category for newcomers is Controllers. Pick Brimstone to familiarize yourself with Valorant and its meta quickly. His simple toolkit will let you focus more on aiming and strategy. Viper is also an excellent choice as it also requires less effort and more brains. The best part is that you can tactfully aggress the enemies using her toolkit.

A beginner's guide to picking agents in Valorant

If you’re looking to get comfortable with an initiator’s ability to offer your team intel, but practicing line-ups with Sova seems tedious, then I would suggest putting some time into unlocking Kay/O. His suppression knife is great for revealing enemy players and forcing them to either push without abilities or delay themselves. His flashes can be used to create great pick opportunities, and his grenade can be used to force opponents out of hiding. His ultimate ability can also help keep enemies from using their utilities as he moves. Kay/O is definitely an initiator worth figuring out, and this article will help guide you through his abilities and some tips and tricks to start making the most of this agent.

Equip a flash grenade. Fire to throw. The flash grenade explodes after a short fuse, blinding anyone in the line of sight.

You can lob or throw flash drives to varying effects. Lobbing the ability over smaller covers, like crates, before turning to clear the area is a good strategy to create easy picks for you and your team. Once you throw the flash, quickly look away so you don’t also blind yourself. The short fuse and ability to bounce the ability of objects give Kay/O a huge advantage.

This ability can be used while pushing, countering a push, or simply to clear confined spaces like the trailer on Bind, so we recommend stocking up on this ability as often as you can.

Once you’re comfortable with flashing, there is a trick you can try to throw your opponents off. If you right-click, you can throw your pop-flash behind you while trying to peek at an opening or angle. If you can pull this off correctly, you will avoid flashing yourself, but the other team should have less time to react.

Equip a suppression blade. Fire to throw. The blade sticks to the first surface it hits. Winds up and suppresses anyone in the radius of the explosion.



This is probably one of Kay/O’s most important abilities. Zero/Point causes an AOE effect, temporarily denying anyone caught in it from using their abilities. It can be thrown almost anywhere, depending on how you toss it. You can cut off choke points or chuck it across the map to surprise anyone caught in spawn. You don’t have to stick to your target. Just catch them in the abilities radius. The ability also notifies you how many and which agents are caught in your trap, which makes for very valuable intel. There will always be opportunities to use this ability, so there is never really a bad time to release it.

It’s important to remember that this ability is more than just a means to discovering where your enemies are hiding. Using the knife simply to locate enemies can lead it to be easily destroyed without gathering enough intel. Use this ability on walls that enemies may be hiding behind. This will make it hard for the enemy to destroy it and easy for you to locate them. Since the knife’s area is like a circular dome, it will still be discovered.

Another strategy would be to locate opponents with essential abilities like Viper, who can obstruct a view with her walls, or Killjoy, who can hold down a site alone with her turret. Get creative with how you use the knife. If you only use it for location, it will limit its usefulness.

Equip an explosive fragment. Fire to throw. The fragment sticks to the floor and explodes multiple times. Dealing near lethal damage at the center with each explosion.



While your opponents have time to escape the damage, catching an unsuspecting player can give them an unhealthy dose of electricity and cut their round short.

This ability has a large area of effect and can punish players for planting or defusing the same way Viper and Killjoy can with their area denial abilities. This ability can be lobbed from a safe distance to catch your enemies off guard, and if you're wanting to see some nice lineups for post-plant or anti-Killjoy Ults, this video by Val player and Youtuber JapaneseCurrymay be a good start:

Instantly overload with polarized radiant energy that empowers Kaay/O and causes large energy pulses to emit from his location. Enemies hit with these pulses are suppressed for a short duration.



This ability sends out a suppression blast that will temporarily disable the abilities of any enemy caught in it. It will pulse about four times over the course of the ultimate, and it has a pretty substantial radius.

Kay/O’s ultimate is a great entry tool! It can suppress an enemy on defense and leave them vulnerable while your team pushes onto the site. Kay/O also gets a fire rate buff while in this state which makes it even better for aggressive players. If Kay/O is killed while ulting, Kay/O will still technically be alive. If killed while ulting, Kay/O will shut down and be completely immobilized. However, a teammate can revive him. With hit points still being buffed in this state, it is possible for your team to come to the rescue, and may lead to an easy pick if your opponents decide to stick around.

When using Flash/Drive, be sure not to blind yourself. Practice throwing the flash behind you to catch the opponent off guard when you peek.

Use Zero/Point for more than just a way to locate the enemy team. This can give you a heads-up on an attack and also nullify incoming opponent abilities.

Freg/Ment can be used to deny a point, so practice your throws and try to catch the enemy unaware.

Null/cmd is best used to enter the site to nullify opponents' abilities

Kay/O is a great initiator and one that may rival Sova. As you get comfortable with him, you will learn different lineups, but he is not as dependent on lineups as Sova’s darts, so Kay/O may be a better choice for beginning Valorant players.

I recommend the Indie Game Business podcast and events. It features career discussions with industry professionals, such as Game UX Strategists. On the Discord server, you can stay up-to-date with new episodes. You can ask questions during live podcasts. Indie Game Business events are advertised in the “announcement channel."
